Surrealism in the oil paintings of Rene Magritte

Your artist painting custom made to order with oil on canvas for your unique wall decoration

Magritte René
Trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, René François Ghislain Magritte quickly turned towards avant-garde research after discovering the Futurist and Cubist movements. This creator of Belgian nationality found his definitive path by joining Parisian Surrealism before founding the Brussels Surrealist group. In an era disrupted by global conflicts, he questioned the complex link between the perception of reality, language, and pictorial representation, upending the viewer's visual certainties.

The technique of this artist is deliberately neutral, smooth, and academic, in order to make the strangeness of his subjects all the more unsettling. His classic palette serves a composition where everyday objects are diverted from their function or natural scale. Iconic canvases like “The treason of images” question the very nature of artistic convention. He likes to conceal faces, as seen in “The Lovers 1” or “The Son of man”, generating a tension between what is hidden and what is revealed. The visual poetry of his works, as expressed in “Black Magic 1”, relies on the unexpected association of daytime skies and nocturnal landscapes or the transformation of organic matter into minerals.

His systematic exploration of visual paradoxes is considered a major intellectual contribution to twentieth-century art. He profoundly influenced Conceptual Art and Pop Art by demonstrating that the image is merely an arbitrary convention detached from the object it designates.
Owning a custom painting by Magritte invites daily poetic and philosophical reflection. A museum quality reproduction allows you to enhance your space with the fascinating illusions of this surrealist master.
