Black Magic 1 (Magritte)

“Black Magic” (1934) by René Magritte is a fascinating exploration of the boundaries between the human body and the natural world. In this first version, Magritte presents a nude female figure, seen in profile, whose body undergoes a troubling metamorphosis. The upper part of her torso, her neck, and her face are not flesh, but blend perfectly into the azure blue sky dotted with cottony clouds that occupies the background. It is as if the woman *becomes* the sky, or the sky is taking human form. Only her arms, stomach, and hips retain a warm, natural skin tone, creating a striking contrast between the living and the ethereal. The woman stands near a beige stone pillar and delicately places her hand on a draped rock, anchoring her half-earthly, half-celestial form in a plausible setting. The sea horizon, a deeper blue, reinforces this dreamlike atmosphere. Magritte challenges our perceptions of reality. The title, “Black Magic”, suggests a supernatural transformation, a spell where identity dissolves into the environment. It is an emblematic work of Surrealism, questioning the duality of being, the separation between inside and outside, and the hidden poetry in the ordinary.
