Wounded Amazon (Stuck)

In this poignant canvas, “Wounded Amazon”, Franz von Stuck depicts the tragic end of a mythological battle. In the foreground, a majestic Amazon warrior, bare-chested and wearing an ornate helmet, collapses on one knee. With one hand, she presses a bleeding wound beneath her breast, while with the other, she struggles to hold up her large scarlet red shield. Her pale face expresses noble resignation. At her feet lies the livid body of another female fighter. In the background, the tumult of the battle rages on with centaurs and arrows flying through an overcast sky. The emotional power of the scene is sublimated by the striking contrast between vulnerable flesh and the overwhelming violence of the red shield. A great classic of fin-de-siècle symbolist art.
