Westminster Bridge by Canaletto

This monumental work is fully part of the eighteenth-century vedutismo movement during the Venetian master’s British stay. Under the temporary name of “Westminster Bridge from the North with the Lord Mayor’s Procession”, the genius artist Canaletto immortalizes a grandiose panoramic view of the Thames in London. The painting depicts the perfect harmony between the new and remarkable classical infrastructures and the flourishing maritime vitality of the English capital.

The imposing white stone bridge, punctuated by numerous regular arches, majestically spans the river from one bank to the other. On the calm waters of the Thames, a multitude of merchant ships, transport boats, and light vessels cross each other actively. In the background on the right, the magnificent gothic towers of the famous Westminster Abbey rise proudly toward a soft blue sky. The opposite bank is lined with tall classical palaces and ashlar stone quays where a dense crowd is active. A soft and pleasant golden late-afternoon light delicately colors the brick buildings and is reflected on the water.
