This work is a celebration of modernity and the new technologies of the early 20th century. Henri Rousseau paints a landscape of the banks of the Seine where the sky is animated by an incredible fleet of aircraft: a biplane, an airship, and a hot-air balloon. These flying machines, symbols of progress, float above a more traditional landscape composed of a bridge, houses, and a barge on the water. The artist’s naive style allows him to juxtapose these elements with great poetic freedom. The composition is clear, almost like a theater stage where each actor, be it a house or an airplane, has its place. The colors are soft and the light is diffuse, creating a dreamlike atmosphere. It is an optimistic and awe-filled vision of the modern world, a world where technology becomes a source of enchantment.
