The wind and the wave (Stuck)

With “The wind and the wave”, Franz von Stuck deploys a tumultuous and erotic allegory of the forces of nature. In the middle of an ocean of dark blue waves with foamy reflections, the Wave is embodied by a naked woman, with dazzlingly white skin and flamboyant hair, abandoning herself with ecstasy to the movement of the water. Emerging from the tormented sky, the Wind takes the form of a virile man with majestic dark wings, swooping down on her in an invisible embrace. The diagonal dynamic of the composition infuses the scene with a perpetual pendulum movement. This painting, resolutely modern in its chromatic contrasts and fluidity, is one of the great manifestos of the artist’s symbolist sensuality.
