“The Staircase” is a dynamic work from Fernand Léger’s “Tubist” period, closely related to his series on the “Exit of the Ballets Russes”. The composition is a tumult of cylindrical and mechanical forms, representing a crowd of robotic figures descending (or ascending) a staircase. The scene is fragmented, capturing the rhythmic movement and cadence of the crowd. The palette is dominated by blue, white, and red—the colors of the French flag—as well as touches of yellow and black, creating a patriotic and dynamic composition on the eve of the war.
