The Smokers by Fernand Léger

This commissioned painting deconstructs a village landscape with great complexity

This early urban landscape brilliantly illustrates the painter’s major contribution to the cubist movement at the beginning of the century. The artist fragments urban space in this dynamic composition entitled “The Smokers”. Fernand Léger develops his own pictorial language by combining geometric volumes and smoke curls. This historical work captures the effervescence and industrial transformation of modern cities with an overflowing and powerful energy.

The urban scene presents a highly complex and fragmented entanglement of red pointed roofs, building facades, and stylized green trees. Large circular shapes of cottony white evoke dense industrial smoke from a factory rising into the gray sky. Dwellings and surrounding vegetation mingle in a tight network of overlapping and layered geometric facets. The chromatic palette associates neutral tones of beige, gray, and purple with bright bursts of red and green. In the foreground, metallic structures and factory elements strongly accentuate the dynamic and mechanical aspect of this industrial landscape. The light seems to emanate from within the fragmented shapes.

The innovative technique of cubist fragmentation is served by a dynamic and textured brushstroke of oil paint. The artist shows exceptional mastery in rendering the contrasts between hard forms and soft curls of smoke. This work testifies to his early creative genius.
