This fearsome vertical variation of “The sin” confirms Franz von Stuck’s obsession with amorous duality. The female figure appears facing forward, her eyes locked into those of the viewer with unsettling assurance. Her spectrally white body, revealing a bare bust, violently opposes the darkness surrounding her. The majestic snake, whose heavy scales shimmer with purplish and green reflections, entwines the woman’s waist and comes to rest its reptilian head, jaw open, just above her shoulder. This stretched format (“long”) amplifies the oppressive and theatrical dimension of the scene, reinforcing the role of venomous seductress of the symbolist femme fatale.
