The Seine at Le Pecq by André Derain

This work of great poetic sensitivity is part of the series of urban and river landscapes painted by the artist along the Seine. In this melancholy canvas entitled “The Seine at Le Pecq”, the artist Derain André captures the hushed and autumnal atmosphere of a tree-lined promenade along the river. Through a palette of broken tones and a rigor of construction, this scene bears witness to his progressive transition toward a geometric simplification influenced by the art of Cézanne.

A wide earthy gray path, bordered by a row of bare trees with dark trunks, diagonally crosses the composition from the foreground toward the left. Several passers-by, including an elegant woman in a black coat and a beige hat in the center, walk calmly under the bare branches. On the right, the river flows peacefully, animated by dark barges moored near the bank and distant factories spewing plumes of white smoke. The low, grayish sky, typical of cool days, envelops the landscape in a diffuse light, emphasizing the shades of ochre, brown, and olive green of the vegetation.

The painter demonstrates here a remarkable mastery of atmospheric perspective and first-rate craftsmanship in the application of the pictorial medium. His talent for orchestrating muted tones and rendering the textures of earth and water gives the work a deep interiority.
