“The Reading” is a monumental group portrait from Fernand Léger’s Purist period. It depicts two women, with impassive faces and “Tubist” bodies, one holding an open book and the other a closed book and flowers. The figures are treated as sculptural objects, with rounded arms and hands. The composition is stable, almost static, and the background is reduced to geometric planes of black, white, and blue. Léger celebrates a modern leisure activity (reading) with the same monumentality as his mechanical subjects.
