The Punishment of Korah by Sandro Botticelli

A monumental work of the Italian Renaissance, painted by the illustrious artist Sandro Botticelli, stands out as a historical fresco of great narrative and theological complexity. Provisionally entitled “The Punishment of Korah”, this monumental fresco illustrates a landmark episode of the Old Testament intended to assert the spiritual and temporal authority of the pope. The composition is organized symmetrically around an imposing Roman triumphal arch standing under a cloudy blue sky. On the left, Moses, dressed in a green robe and a golden cloak, raises his staff to repel the rebels attempting to stone him. In the center, in front of a stone altar, he brandishes his rod against the conspirators led by Korah who collapse in terror. On the right, the earth opens up to swallow the traitors under the eyes of an agitated crowd in draped Renaissance attire. In the background, a calm sea bordered by gentle hills stretches under a clear and homogeneous light.

The creator demonstrates an exceptional technical mastery of fresco painting and the anatomical drawing of his numerous characters. His ability to articulate several moments of a narrative within a single architectural space bears witness to a perfect management of geometric perspective and spatial depth.
