The Procuress by Johannes Vermeer

This lively and colorful genre scene bears witness to the artist’s early days in interior painting influenced by caravaggism. The painter Vermeer Jan stages a joyful group gathered in a warm tavern in this composition entitled “The Procuress” representative of the Dutch baroque movement. The prodigious mastery of Vermeer Jan is illustrated in the contrasted treatment of warm colors and the glow of light on the faces. The realistic rendering of materials, in particular the complex patterns of the woolen carpet and the brilliance of the ceramic, demonstrates an exceptionally high-quality oil painting technique.
