Unlike the abstract grey version, this “Piano Lesson” (1923) offers a more decorative and colorful vision of the family scene. The work is dominated by a red background with complex ornamental patterns. The three brothers, Pierre, Jean, and the young model, are depicted in a warm, bourgeois atmosphere. The contrasts between the red of the wall, the blue of the dress, and the stripes of the clothes create a visual richness typical of Matisse’s Nice period.
