Monumental work from 1952, “The Parakeet and the Mermaid” is one of Matisse’s largest cut-outs. Against a brilliant white background, multicolored vegetal shapes (algae, leaves) dance around two subtle figures: a blue parakeet and a blue mermaid. It is an abstract Garden of Eden, an explosion of joy and pure color that summarizes the artist’s entire approach at the end of his life: drawing directly into color.
