The Painter’s Window (Juan Gris)

This work is a mise en abyme of the act of painting. The composition is a still life arranged on a desk in front of a window. We see playing cards, a palette, a pear, and a guitar. The artist’s hand, holding a card, enters the frame. Gris plays with different levels of reality: the wooden table, the painted objects, the view from the window. The color palette is warm, dominated by reds and browns. It is a reflection on art itself, on the creative process and the relationship between the artist and his model. A work of great intellectual richness.
