This horizontally cropped variant of “The murderer” accentuates the dynamic of flight and pursuit. By stretching the space to the right, the eye is inevitably drawn to the distant figure of the criminal escaping down the damp alley. In the foreground, the Furies with their spectral faces, wrapped in darkness and sinuous snakes, seem to emerge from the wall itself to swoop down on their prey. The cold palette, dominated by cadaverous grays and deep blacks, underscores the absolute despair of the scene. Franz von Stuck uses this ahead-of-its-time cinematic framing to multiply the anguish and theatricality of this intense psychological drama.
