The meal of the Gauls after Pieter Bruegel

This impressive genre painting plunges us into the heart of a festive popular banquet, revisiting a major scene of the Flemish Renaissance through the features of the indomitable Gaulish village. The artist offers an ingenious reinterpretation of the iconic work by Pieter Bruegel the Elder. Titled “The meal of the Gauls (after Bruegel)”, this creation transposes Flemish peasantry into the universe of the famous French comic book, offering a vibrant tribute to the spirit of camaraderie and joy of life.

The humor of the parody relies on the systematic replacement of Flemish peasants with Albert Uderzo’s cartoon characters. In the center of the composition, the giant Obelix happily stuffs himself with a massive pile of roasted wild boars and sausages, replacing the consumption of porridge from the original work of Bruegel. Bruegel’s bagpipe players are reinterpreted in a humorous way by the musicians of the Gaulish village, while numerous Roman helmets lie on the ground as combat trophies.
