Painted in 1907, “The Hairdressing” is a significant work marking Matisse’s transition after Fauvism. The classical subject of the toilette is treated with a geometrization of volumes that heralds Cubism. The tones are more muted, dominated by ochres, greens, and flesh pinks. The tension between the seated nude woman and the standing woman dressed in green creates an architectural and solemn composition.
