The Great Black Divers (Léger)

“The Great Black Divers” is a powerful work from Fernand Léger’s American period. Against a white background, massive, biomorphic human figures intertwine. Unlike his other “Divers” series, this one is dominated by large black forms, which create a striking contrast with the flat areas of pure primary colors: yellow, red, blue, and green. The bodies are fluid, almost abstract, capturing the energy and movement of swimming in a dynamic space. Léger dissociates color from line, letting the colored forms float freely.
