Through this wide-ranging masterpiece provisionally titled “The Grand Canal from the Church of Santa Maria della Salute 1”, the illustrious painter Canaletto immortalizes the entrance to the Grand Canal of Venice. The artist succeeds in capturing the continuous maritime activity that characterized this strategic point of the lagoon, thus offering a dynamic and rigorously documented vision of Venetian daily life.

On the right, the imposing baroque silhouette of the Santa Maria della Salute church raises its majestic light stone domes under an azure sky crossed by a large, very fluffy white cloud. The forecourt of the religious building is animated by small groups of citizens dressed in dark robes, long cloaks, and traditional tricorn hats. In the foreground, numerous black gondolas and small fishermen’s boats actively navigate the dark, shimmering waters of the canal. The boatmen stand upright to maneuver their wooden oars with great precision. In the background, the facades of the palaces on the left bank stretch in perspective under the clarity of a cool afternoon.
