The fawn and the nymph (Stuck)

In “The fawn and the nymph”, Franz von Stuck returns to his taste for sensual mythology and mysterious chiaroscuros. The almost square composition stages two characters lying in the tall grass of a darkened forest. In the foreground, a ravishing naked nymph, with luminous, pearlescent skin, lies on her stomach, looking at the viewer with a smile of feigned candor. Behind her, almost blending with the shadows of nature, we can make out the dark, hairy body of a faun embracing her with a protective arm. The soft light striking the young woman’s back contrasts radically with the surrounding darkness, where only a few bluish reflections of the sky pierce through the heavy tree trunks. A hypnotic canvas, an ode to wild eroticism.
