“The Divers” is a key work from Fernand Léger’s American period. Inspired by New York swimming pools and divers in Marseille, he created a dynamic composition of intertwined human bodies. The figures, rendered in grisaille (shaded black and white), stand out against a background of biomorphic forms in pure colors: red, yellow, blue, and green. Léger explores the freedom of the body in space, moving away from the static rigor of his earlier works. It is an explosion of movement and life, where line and color are dissociated.
