The Daughter of Jephthah by Degas

Painted during his years of classical training, this ambitious historical composition by the realist master Degas Edgar, entitled “The Daughter of Jephthah”, illustrates his desire to renew the great genre of history painting. This masterly artwork is inspired by a dramatic Old Testament narrative, testifying to his constant search for an original synthesis between the lessons of the Italian Renaissance masters, such as Piero della Francesca, and a keen sense of theatrical tension and collective psychological expression.

On the right side in the foreground, we see several soldiers dressed in yellow tunics and shiny metal helmets moving about, one of them holding a large green palm leaf. In the background in the center-right, his young daughter in distress is surrounded by a group of mourning companions draped in blue, white, and fuchsia pink robes, embracing under trees.

The artist’s technical virtuosity shines in the complexity of this monumental and dynamic staging.
