This panoramic variant of Franz von Stuck’s “The Dance” tightens the action on the festive procession, eliminating most of the sky for a more stretched format. This horizontal framing accentuates the movement of the farandole: the frenzy of the intertwined bodies, the bright colors of the drapes (deep red, royal blue), and the harsh light that strikes the back of the naked central figure. Von Stuck’s impasto brushstrokes translate the intoxication of the moment with an almost Fauvist energy. On the right, the heavy base of the column highlights the ancient theatricality of the scene.
