The Coronation of the Virgin by Sandro Botticelli

This monumental masterpiece of the Florentine Renaissance, created by the great painter Sandro Botticelli, constitutes a theological representation of incomparable splendor. Temporarily designated under the title “The Coronation of the Virgin”, this choral composition expresses the religious fervor and the stylistic transition of the artist towards more solemn forms. By opposing celestial glory and earthly gravity, the painter conceives a sacred work of art of profound mystical dimension.

In the upper arched part, God the Father crowns the Virgin Mary in the midst of a brilliant golden dome and a circle of red and yellow flames. A joyful ring of dancing angels, throwing multicolored roses, surrounds this divine coronation on a ground of whitish clouds. In the lower earthly part, four large-scale saints stand side by side in a hilly landscape under a blue sky. On the left, an apostle in a purple cloak raises his right hand to the heavens while holding his open book. Beside him, two bishops in precious mitres and a cardinal in an imposing red hat meditate or write with gravity.

The technical virtuosity of the craftsman shines particularly in the sumptuous treatment of the celestial gold leaf and the infinite variety of facial expressions.
