Three plump cherubs with rounded bottoms busy themselves around a large bass viol placed in the center of the scene. The middle toddler firmly holds the instrument and prepares to draw the bow across the strings with a concentrated gesture. To his left, his companion lying on his stomach attentively examines a large open book of sheet music. On the right, the third putto observes the scene, a finger placed on his mouth in a sign of gentle daydreaming. In the background, a stone fountain pours clear water near a truncated classical column and tall trees. A soft golden light envelops the rosy flesh of the children, contrasting with the muted tones of the antique decor.

François Boucher’s mastery of oil painting is fully expressed in the delicate modeling of the children’s bodies.
