The Bucintoro at the Molo on Ascension Day 3 by Canaletto

This theatrical work is majestically part of the eighteenth-century vedutismo movement, renowned for its grandiose historical reconstructions. Under the provisional title of “The Bucintoro at the Molo on Ascension Day 3”, the famous Venetian painter Canaletto immortalizes a sumptuous celebration in front of the Saint Mark’s Square dock. The painting highlights the symbolic power of the Serenissima during its great traditional nautical festivals which attracted the attention of all Europe.

The basin of the lagoon is crowded with a multitude of dark gondolas and luxurious parade boats richly decorated with magnificent glittering gilding. In the center of the composition, the doge’s splendid gilded galley floats proudly, surrounded by small vessels where vigorous Venetian rowers are active. In the background, the Doge’s Palace with its characteristic pink facade and the tall column of Saint Mark stand out clearly. An imposing red brick campanile dominates the left of the urban landscape under a clear blue sky dotted with fluffy clouds. The brilliant sunlight illuminates the architectures and makes the precious fabrics of the assembly shine.

Canaletto deploys an exceptional technical virtuosity in organizing this complex and lively maritime crowd. His mastery of oil painting allows him to contrast the water reflections with the glints of the ducal vessel’s gilding.
