“The Bridge of the Tugboat” is a dynamic composition from Fernand Léger’s mechanical period. It deconstructs the view from a ship’s bridge and its surroundings into a complex assembly of geometric forms and pure colors. Planes of orange, green, red, and purple intersect with gray, white, and black mechanical forms. A stylized human figure is visible on the right. Léger does not seek to describe the boat, but to convey the visual sensation of life on deck, a mix of industrial structures, water, and human activity, all within a Cubist rhythm.
