The Black Root (Léger)

“The Black Root” is an abstract and graphic lithograph by Fernand Léger. In the center, a large black biomorphic form, evoking a root or a creature, dominates the composition. It is set against a white background, but surrounded by a chaos of black lines and blocks of pure color: red, yellow, blue, and purple/pink. This work is an example of his late style, where the line is emancipated from form and color is used for its own energy. It is a dynamic and rhythmic composition, an abstract ballet of forms and colors.
