The Bathers (Marc)

This work, “The Bathers”, painted by Franz Marc in 1909, is an early exploration of his style, showing a transition between a more classical naturalism and the Expressionism he would fully adopt later. The painting depicts three naked women, or nymphs, on a riverbank in a forest landscape. The bodies are modeled with a certain softness, but the colors of the surrounding landscape are already beginning to become more expressive and less realistic. The deep blues and bold greens of the trees and water create a striking contrast with the skin tones. This work reveals Marc’s fascination with the connection between the human body and nature.
