The Bath by Degas

This bold pastel is part of the famous series of nudes and bath scenes that Edgar Degas produced at the height of his artistic career. Through the composition temporarily titled “The Bath”, the artist explores domestic intimacy with raw and uncompromising realism. Breaking completely with the classical idealization of female bodies, this work aligns with the Impressionist movement through its original framing, its plunging perspective, and its masterly transcription of ordinary rituals.

On the left side, an entirely nude woman is captured in a dynamic pose, stepping over the edge of a zinc bathtub to wash herself. Her arched body is oriented toward the background, her face concealed by the movement of her tilted head. On the right, a large screen or hanging of a bright and luminous orange structures the interior space and brings intense warmth to the composition. In the foreground, large crumpled white linens rest on the floor, next to a carpet with blue and purple patterns. The light sculpts the body’s volumes with great force, creating striking contrasts between the milky clarity and the shadows of the room.

Edgar Degas’s exceptional craftsmanship is manifested in the virtuoso use of dry pastel to superimpose chromatic layers.
