The Ballet Rehearsal by Degas

Capturing the vast and silent space of a rehearsal studio of the Paris Opera, this panoramic painting entitled “The Ballet Rehearsal” bears witness to a highly daring graphic search. Composed by the master Degas Edgar, this major work belongs to the Impressionist movement through its original framing. The artist uses the frieze format to orchestrate the rhythms and intervals between bodies, transforming a simple daily work session into a true modern wall decoration.

The large pictorial space is vertically divided by a thin dark wooden pillar located in the very center of the composition. On the left of the image, on an oblique floor with wide wooden slats, several ballerinas practice their moves by leaning on the barre fixed along the far left wall. On the right, other dancers enjoy a moment of rest. One of them, seated in profile, stretches her left leg forward to adjust her pink slipper. Behind her, a companion bends forward to tie her ribbons, while another taller ballerina stands calmly in the soft shadow of the background.

The technical excellence of the artist is revealed in the subtle treatment of diffuse light and space. Degas Edgar uses rapid oil brushstrokes to suggest the depth of the wooden floor and the lightness of the white tutus. His mastery of perspective and rigorous drawing gives this ordinary scene a timeless monumentality.
