The arab and his steed* by Jean-Léon Gérôme

This work of great melancholy is fully part of the Orientalism movement, a French artistic trend that was particularly popular in the nineteenth century. The famous painter Gérôme Jean-Léon represents here the solitude and harshness of nomadic life in the vast desert expanses of the East. The composition entitled “The arab and his steed” stages a grief-stricken traveler seated next to his mount collapsed from exhaustion or death. This moving and poetic creation testifies to the fascination of the era for human tragedy in the face of the immensity of nature.

In an arid and infinite desert landscape under a very clear blue sky, a chestnut horse is lying on its side in the middle of the burning sand. Near its head, its rider dressed in a long white toga and a white turban sits on the ground, prostrated in silent grief. Next to them, the saddle and some travel baggage are scattered on the arid and rocky ground. In the background, a long cliff of golden rocks and distant rocky mountains rise under the crushing sun, emphasizing the feeling of absolute solitude. The harsh and uniform afternoon light bathes the entire scene in ochre and sandy tones, leaving only rare short shadows on the ground.

The virtuosity of the artist shines in the dramatic representation of the anatomy of the lying horse and the striking realism of the desert rocks. His exceptional mastery of oil painting makes it possible to make the crushing heat and the dust of the desert palpable. This is a masterpiece of narrative sensitivity and academic precision.
