Still Life with Book and Oranges de Paul Signac

This charming still life constitutes a rare and precious incursion by the artist into the genre of representing indoor objects. Paul Signac applies his principles of tone division to simple everyday elements in this work titled “Still Life with Book and Oranges”. An old book with a thick spine and a bluish cover, bearing a very clear cursive inscription, is placed obliquely in the foreground. On the right, a tall transparent stemmed glass contains an elegant bouquet of wild wildflowers in blue, red, and yellow colors, standing out against a dark and textured background.

The masterly use of oil painting makes it possible to obtain a striking rendering of the textures of the tablecloth and the skin of the fruits.
