St-Augustine in his cell by Sandro Botticelli

This admirable panel from the humanist period, provisionally designated by the title “St-Augustine in his cell”, is an intimate composition by the illustrious Botticelli Sandro. This religious painting is part of the intellectual effervescence of the Florentine Renaissance, illustrating the cult of the great theologians of the Church. Through this representation of studious solitude, the artist highlights the spiritual and intellectual quest that characterizes the movement of the time.

Within a narrow grey stone architectural space with a barrel vault, an elderly saint with a white beard and a tonsure encircled by a halo sits before a dark wooden desk. Dressed in a bright red cape edged with dark fur over a brown cassock, he holds a quill and attentively writes a book. On the left, a large ochre-yellow curtain is draped, revealing shelves loaded with antique books with precious bindings. On the floor, crumpled parchments and fragments of written texts litter the wooden floorboards. Above the worktable, the arch’s lunette features a delicate bas-relief depicting the Madonna and Child. The light coming from the right gently bathes the scholar’s wrinkled face, creating an atmosphere of deep concentration.

The Florentine painter displays here all the rigor of his tempera technique to define extremely realistic textures, from weathered wood to crumpled parchment.
