Smurfs The Great Wave off Kanagawa after Katsushika Hokusai

An oil on canvas merging the codes of Japanese printmaking with popular comic books

This magnificent oil painting revisits with refreshing originality the most famous Japanese print in the world, originally created by the great master Hokusai. By replacing the Japanese sailors with adorable little blue creatures, the artist proposes a captivating maritime parody titled “Smurfs The Great Wave off Kanagawa”. This work skillfully merges the graphic codes of traditional ukiyo-e with the popular Franco-Belgian comic strip created by Peyo.

The major difference of this parody relies on the unusual presence of a surfing Smurf who is bravely sliding on the white foam of a gigantic, threatening wave on his small yellow surfboard. In the background, Mount Fuji rises under a beige and grey sky, while several traditional Japanese boats struggle desperately against the raging and turbulent waves of the ocean, each filled with little Smurfs wearing their classic white caps and blue pants. The aesthetics of the waves, drawn like sharp claws of white foam and intense blue shades, meticulously respects Hokusai’s graphic style, while integrating the graphic roundness and jovial humor of the Smurfs’ universe.

The artist’s skill lies in his ability to harmonize Hokusai’s classic ink style with modern oil hues. The precise rendering of the boat details and the dynamic movement of the waves demonstrate remarkable craftsmanship, combining Japanese rigor and European fantasy in a spectacular way.
