Sisyphus (Stuck)

With “Sisyphus”, Franz von Stuck gives a spectacular and muscular form to one of the most tragic myths of Antiquity. The artwork depicts the vain and eternal effort of the Greek hero, condemned to push an immense rock to the top of a mountain. Turned away, Sisyphus’s naked and athletic body arches under the crushing weight of the stone, every muscle tense in unbearable strain. The artist uses dramatic chiaroscuro, sculpting the flesh with a pallid glow that contrasts with the darkness of the mountain. In the background, a sky ablaze with blood red evokes the stifling atmosphere of the Underworld. This symbolist canvas, both dark and monumental, is a poignant allegory of the human condition and fatality.
