Simon de Varie Kneeling in Prayer by Jean Fouquet

This monumental votive portrait constitutes one of the absolute peaks of portrait art from the French Renaissance in the mid-fifteenth century. Entitled “Simon de Varie Kneeling in Prayer”, this famous painting is attributed to the eminent Jean Fouquet, who here immortalizes the piety of a noble knight in a solemn and intimate form. The artist brilliantly combines the meticulous realism of Flemish details with the geometric nobility inherited from his travels in Italy.

The work presents a young knight kneeling in prayer, hands clasped and gaze turned to the left with gravity. He wears a sumptuous scarlet red doublet entirely embroidered with complex golden floral patterns, fitted over steel plate armor made of sparkling steel. Beside him, a noble lady wearing a tall white conical hennin draped with a transparent veil respectfully holds his large tournament helmet. The latter is surmounted by a sculptural crest in the shape of silver wings and a royal blue heraldic shield decorated with golden fleurs-de-lis. The scene stands out against a background of heavy dark grey pleated draperies.

Jean Fouquet here displays outstanding expertise in the psychological realism of the faces and the tactile rendering of precious materials. The surgical precision of his brush and his virtuoso treatment of volumes make this double portrait an unmatched masterpiece in the history of French painting.
