Siberian Shepherd Dogs (Marc)

In this early work, Franz Marc employs an Impressionist touch to capture a winter scene. Two large shepherd dogs with light-colored coats move through a snowy landscape. The brushwork is quick and fragmented, suggesting the animals’ movement and the texture of the snow. Sunlight is a key element, creating bright yellow and white reflections on the dogs’ backs. The shadows on the snow are rendered in shades of blue, a typical Impressionist technique to convey the coldness and brightness of winter.
