This masterly fresco of the Italian Renaissance, painted by the famous artist Botticelli Sandro, is set at the heart of the pontifical decorations of the Sistine Chapel. Provisionally entitled “Scenes from the Life of Moses*”, this creation bears witness to the theological and humanist erudition characterizing the court of the sovereign pontiff at that time. Through a highly fluid visual narration, the artist illustrates edifying biblical episodes to exalt moral virtues and divine protection.

In the foreground, two graceful young women with golden-blonde hair, finely braided and adorned with ribbons, stand side by side. The left figure, in three-quarter view, holds a wooden crook and carries wild fruits in the fold of her white and gold dress. The right figure, seen from behind, gently turns her face in profile while also holding a long shepherd’s staff. Around them, sheep with woolly fleeces and a black ram assemble peacefully under the trees. In the background, other characters transport heavy terracotta water jars and golden vessels beneath a dense, dark foliage. A soft light envelops the scene, highlighting the pleated draperies of the tunics in pastel shades.

The creator demonstrates exceptional craftsmanship in the delicate representation of female faces and the elegance of wavy hair. His mastery of fresco painting allows him to render the fluidity of light fabrics and the texture of animal fur with striking realism.
