Scene from the Steeplechase by Degas

This dramatic transitional painting is a beautiful reproduction of the violence of sport

Presented as a dramatic work of transition, the painting entitled “Scene from the Steeplechase - The Fallen Jockey” marks a decisive realistic turning point in the career of Edgar Degas. The artist breaks away from classical history painting to confront the modernity of horse racing, one of his favorite themes. This bold composition captures the violence and unpredictability of athletic effort, translating the psychological and physical tension of an accident occurring at the heart of the competition.

In the foreground on the right of the image, a young jockey wearing a fuchsia pink jacket and white pants lies completely lifeless on the dark green grassy ground. His body is stretched on his back, his head tilted towards the right of the canvas, his eyes closed in an expression of pain or unconsciousness. Above him, two powerful dark bay horses leap at a full gallop towards the left side of the composition, their muscles tensed by the violent action of the race. The rider on the left mount wears a bright red jacket and a white cap and looks straight ahead.

The technical virtuosity of the artist is fully expressed in the anatomical precision of the rendering of the horses and the lifeless body of the jockey. Edgar Degas handles oil paint with a vigorous and expressive touch that gives life and depth to this tragic scene. His masterly control of movement in power and dramatic tension establishes his innovative genius.
