Samson (Stuck)

The painting “Samson” illustrates the incredible strength of the biblical judge in a scene of unprecedented struggle, masterfully painted by Franz von Stuck. The hero, entirely naked and endowed with a Herculean musculature, slays a colossal lion with his bare hands. The entanglement of the bodies creates a furious dynamic, with Samson literally tearing apart the jaws of the tawny beast struggling on the ground. The almost monochrome palette, made of brown, ochre, and golden tones, accentuates the savage roughness of the combat and recalls the patina of bronze sculptures. In the upper left corner of this large horizontal format, the word “SAMSON” is majestically inscribed, giving this biblical artwork the monumentality of an ancient epic.
