Saint Praxidis by Johannes Vermeer

Drawing its subject from early Christian hagiography, this large religious painting illustrates the compassion and devotion of a saintly martyr. Entitled “Saint Praxidis”, this rare artwork created by Jan Vermeer depicts the young woman wringing a sponge soaked with martyrs’ blood. The artist combines Italian art heritage with the precision of the Dutch tradition.

Kneeling in the scene center, the saint dressed in an ample vermilion red gown and white bodice squeezes a sponge over a chased bronze vase. Her hands collect the precious red liquid flowing into the metal cup set on the ground. She holds a small wooden cross against her chest while lowering her eyes in fervent prayer. In the background, an antique architectural setting composed of dark stone blocks and a blue sky opens onto a small distant figure. Light hits the red drapery of her outfit with great intensity.
