Rhythm 2 by Robert Delaunay

This masterly work of lyrical abstraction, temporarily titled “Rhythm 2”, illustrates the subsequent research of the artist Robert Delaunay on rhythm and geometry. By combining dark and light value contrasts with pure chromatic agreements, the painter creates a sensation of ascending movement. This painting asserts itself as a brilliant study on the optical resonance of simple forms.

The vertical composition presents a beautiful ascending diagonal of three perfect two-tone discs, each divided into equal black and white halves by a sharp oblique line. These highly graphic circles are superimposed on large, colorful concentric discs painted in ultramarine blue, golden yellow, light green, and scarlet red. Two bright orange crescents also flank the outer ends of this dynamic trajectory on both sides of the canvas. The background is a light gray surface, finely textured with slight horizontal cross-hatchings that delicately catch the ambient light, wonderfully reinforcing the overall spatial depth without using any traditional geometric perspective.
