Pygmalion (Stuck)

Franz von Stuck’s artwork “Pygmalion” is a vibrant and sensual interpretation of the famous Ovidian myth. In the center of an uncluttered room with walls lined in a deep carmine red, the sculptor Pygmalion, dressed in a simple blue tunic, has fallen to his knees. Arms outstretched in a surge of stupor and adoration, he witnesses the miracle: the statue of Galatea he has fashioned comes to life. The female figure, of marmoreal whiteness, leans gracefully towards her creator, her perfect nudity embodying the ideal of classical beauty. On the floor, the abandoned hammer and tools bear witness to the passage from artifice to reality. Von Stuck signs here a masterful allegory on the power of art, desire, and the magic of creation, magnified by an interplay of intense colors.
