Poachers in the Snow by Gustave Courbet

This winter scene testifies to the painter’s constant interest in rural life and the world of hunting in his native Franche-Comté. With this work entitled “Poachers in the Snow”, the artist Gustave Courbet delivers a realistic and direct testimony of the outdoor activities of his contemporaries. This painting departs from idealized representations to show the harsh reality of rustic life, thus placing itself at the heart of the aesthetic revolution led by the Realist movement in the mid-nineteenth century.

In a vast snowy landscape under a clear blue sky, two hunters progress with difficulty through the thick powder. The first figure, dressed in a dark jacket and wearing a black hat, walks with a heavy step, a rifle over his right shoulder. Behind him, the second hunter, wearing a blue jacket, raises a stick to encourage or direct a dog at his feet. A hare or dead game is hung from his back. Two hunting dogs, one black and white, the other spotted, search the snow looking for tracks. The bluish shadows projected on the white coat emphasize the low light of a winter day, while the diagonal composition reinforces the movement of the walkers.

The artist shows here his immense expertise in rendering snow and winter textures with oil paint. Thanks to vigorous brushstrokes and subtle contrasts, he manages to recreate the biting cold, the materiality of the powder snow, and the truth of human attitudes with incomparable realism.
