Pigs (Marc)

In “Pigs”, Franz Marc applies the principles of Cubism to his favorite animal subjects. Two pigs, one red and one blue, are deconstructed into geometric facets. They are integrated into a background that is itself a mosaic of brightly colored squares and rectangles: greens, yellows, blues, and browns. This checkerboard structure creates rhythm and unity across the entire surface of the canvas. Far from naturalistic representation, Marc seeks to express the essence of the animal, its place in the cosmic order. The colors are symbolic, with red possibly evoking the earth and materiality, while blue suggests a more spiritual dimension. It is a joyful and structured work, an almost musical vision of the animal world where form and color dialogue in perfect harmony.
