“Père Junier’s Cart” is a group portrait touching in its naivety and solemnity. Henri Rousseau depicts his friend Junier and his family on a cart ride. The composition is frontal and static, giving the characters an almost iconic presence. Each figure, including the white horse and the two dogs, is painted with the same meticulous attention, without hierarchy. The Douanier’s style is perfectly recognizable here: sharp outlines, flat areas of color, no atmospheric perspective, and a certain stiffness in the poses.
