Pentecost by Jean Fouquet

This grandiose theological composition illustrates the outpouring of the Holy Spirit with remarkable artistic and spatial sensitivity. Entitled “Pentecost”, this prestigious miniature is painted by the talented Jean Fouquet, who here combines Northern naturalism with the classical balance of the Renaissance. Through this eye-catching gathering, the creator stages the spiritual fervor and unity of the apostles in a refined architectural setting inspired by Italian Antiquity.

The Virgin Mary, dressed in a long azure blue cloak, is seated in the center of the composition, her hands joined in prayer. She is installed under a large golden niche in the shape of a scallop shell, flanked by green fluted columns. On each side, the apostles are kneeling or seated in a semicircle, dressed in voluminous draperies in shades of green, red, and royal blue. At the top, under a curved wooden vault, the white dove representing the Holy Spirit descends from heaven in a beam of straight golden rays. The spiritual light illuminates the gathered and individualized faces of the faithful.
